Chapter 49

I’m Here For My Present

From the moment Sang Yan appeared at the noodles shop, everything had felt unreal. At that moment, her thoughts were flooded from his words and she couldn’t regain her footing.

Wen Yifan dumbly stared at the person in front of her. A whole night of worry was replaced by something new. Her nose burned and her lips quivered, but no words were said.

Like an unexpected surprise, a desire she never dared to imagine, coming without a warning. She didn’t dare to believe it, not even having the courage to reach out to it.

Afraid that once she reached out, everything in front of her eyes would dissolve into nothing.

For a split second, Wen Yifan recalled the end of last year when she coincidentally met Sang Yan at OverTime, when he’d acted like a stranger and had a questionable attitude towards her. She’d tried her best to not mind it.

After all, she could understand him and that reaction was quite natural.

Wen Yifan was the person who brought harm onto Sang Yan.

That’s why, it wasn’t worth letting her occupy space within his precious memories. To him, she was just an insignificant person, whose traces can be covered over by another person.

She thought, that was all she was to him.

But at that moment, Wen Yifan finally realised.

It didn’t seem like that was the case.

Perhaps he’d met all sort of people before.

Perhaps, in that journey, his feelings for her had simmered down.

But he had not forgotten about her.

After all these years, everything had changed.

I still, only like you.

Wen Yifan stared at him without blinking.

Suddenly, she really hoped that her memories could roll over like a movie film. That way, she would be able to save this scene forever.

Never forgetting. Never wanting to forget.

Seeing how she wasn’t making a sound, Sang Yan slightly pursed his bottom lip, looking slightly out of place.

“Hey, say something.”

Wen Yifan was snapped out of it by his words. She lightly sniffled, feeling like she should reply with something romantic too, but after this surprise, she felt the need to thread with caution.

“If you think these kinds of words are humiliating-“

Sang Yan lowered his eyes on her.

Wen Yifan seriously said, “-then I’ll be the one to say it next time.”

Sang Yan froze at those words.

Wen Yifan’s ears gradually burned, like a child who received a precious toy, not knowing how to give a proper response.

“But, it’s a little difficult for me as well,” she said.

Sang Yan stared at her. The corners of his lips faintly curving upwards.

After saying that, she fell silent again.

Wen Yifan realised, she hadn’t gave a reply to his confession yet. She glanced at him and continued, “So now we…”

“Hm?”

“…Have mutual feelings.”

“…”

Hearing that, Sang Yan’s jaw clenched as he smiled, trying to hold back a laugh.

And a string of laughter slipped out.

Wen Yifan wasn’t sure what he was laughing about, but feeling like the conversation wasn’t over, she pulled him back on topic saying, “So, from now on, you’re my boyfriend?”

Sang Yan was still smiling. “Yes.”

Wen Yifan glanced up at the man who was laughing in front of her.

The dimple on the right side of his cheek dipped in. His eyebrows were relaxed when he smiled and he looked very happy.

Wen Yifan’s lips curved up as well.

The surreal feeling did not subside. It only intensified.

And that was why she was extremely happy. She only hoped that this dream-like situation would continue on, unchanging.

The sudden change of their relationship status made Wen Yifan not know how to interact with him. She didn’t say anymore and only stared at his face which was close to hers. The little mole on his eyelids was clearly visible.

Wen Yifan’s mind started to wander off again.

Because of her sense of unease, she started to wonder if this was a monster disguised as Sang Yan who came on this rainy night to confuse her.

The next second, Sang Yan’s laugh mellowed down and asked arrogantly, “Are you that happy?”

“Huh?”

“Hm, true.” Sang Yan glanced at the curves of her lips. “For you to be able to get such an outstanding guy like me, it’s a cause for celebration.”

“…”

Sang Yan said in a merciful tone, “Fine, you can continue.”

Wen Yifan licked her lips and quietly retracted the thought she had.

There shouldn’t be a monster this shameless.

The temperature in Beiyu was slightly lower than that in Nanwu. Adding to the fact that it had been raining for a while, the wind was quite chilly. Although it was a little past eight, most of the shops along the street were closed and only a few food stalls remained open.

Both of them continued walking.

Wen Yifan took the initiative to ask, “Have you booked a hotel?”

“No.”

Wen Yifan subconsciously glanced at him and immediately noticed the rain on his shoulder. His jacket was waterproof and didn’t soak through. The raindrops slid down the jacket. She raised her hand and helped him pat it off and asked, “Have you eaten your dinner?”

“Not yet either.” Sang Yan seized her wrist and stopped her actions. “What’re you touching? Are you not cold?”

Wen Yifan noted, “Move the umbrella over a little. Your clothes are wet.”

“Wen Shuang Jiang,” Sang Yan’s fingers were warm, and slowly moved up, gently covered her rain-soaked hand, but quickly let go. “When you’re accepting service from someone else, don’t have this many opinions, understand?”

“…”

Wen Yifan stared at her hand which was left hanging before slowly lowering it. Although it was only for a moment, the parts of her hand where Sang Yan had held started heating up.

Melting away the coldness from the raindrops.

She held her palm for some reason before stuffing her hand into her pockets.

Both of them didn’t say a word along the way and most of the time was spent in silence, but in the midst of the silence, they were both intertwined by their feelings.

When they passed by a fruits stall, Wen Yifan suddenly stopped.

Sang Yan looked at her. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m gonna get something,” said Wen Yifan.

Sang Yan didn’t question what she’d wanted to buy and simply said, “Hm, go ahead.”

Wen Yifan went in and only took two apples and brought it to the cashier. Just as she was about to pay, Sang Yan already had his phone out to scan the QR code and paid.

The shop owner placed the apples into a bag and passed it to them.

Sang Yan took it and asked, “You wanted to eat apples?”

Wen Yifan pointed at the fruits and then at him. She said, “I did say I’d give you the real one.”

Sang Yan made a sound.

After leaving the fruits stall, Wen Yifan went and bought dinner for Sang Yan at a nearby restaurant.

They eventually returned to the hotel Wen Yifan was staying in. She went to the concierge and suggested, “You should just stay in this hotel for the night. You can head back to Nanwu with us.”

“Sure,” said Sang Yan.

Wen Yifan made an enquiry to the concierge and used Sang Yan’s identity card to book a room on the same floor as hers. She took the opportunity to look at the photo on his card. He looked slightly more younger and his brows were slightly raised, his arrogance on full display.

It looked like it was taken when he was in college.

She couldn’t help for take a few more glances.

Sang Yan looked at her. “What are you doing?”

Wen Yifan was about to explain, but once she raised her head, she bumped into his face that had grown even more arrogant as time passed.

She swallowed her words immediately. “It’s nothing.”

After settling the paperwork at the concierge, Sang Yan took the room card and his identity card back. They both walked towards the elevator. He placed the room card in his pocket, but passed his identity card to her naturally.

Wen Yifan took it, but wasn’t sure what he meant by it. “What’s up?”

Sang Yan dragged, “Look at it if you want to.”

“…”

She didn’t expect Sang Yan to act this way and she was stunned. Wen Yifan tilted her head as she stared at the Sang Yan on the identity card. After a few seconds, she raised her gaze to see the Sang Yan who was standing next to her with his hands in his pockets, waiting for the elevator to arrive.

His eyes were fixed on the passing numbers of the elevator and didn’t look her way.

Wen Yifan looked away and licked her lower lip.

Both of them went up to the third floor.

Wen Yifan noticed the signage on the wall and pointed at a direction. “Your room’s that way.”

Sang Yan said as-a-matter-of-factly, “Bring me along to go look for it.”

“Sure.” When she’d brought him to his room, Wen Yifan wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to enter and hesitantly said, “I’ll… Head back to my room?”

Sang Yan tilted his head. “Do you still have work?”

“No.”

“Do you have something else to do?”

“No.”

“Then why’re you going back?” Sang Yan felt like it was absurd and passed the room card to her. “Go in yourself.”

Wen Yifan took it and unlocked the door. She entered and sat on the chair next to the bed. Feeling like he was slightly upset, she quietly explained. “We just started our relationship. I was afraid that I might be invading your privacy and may upset you.”

Sang Yan placed the items in his hand onto the table. “You sound like you’re a righteous gentleman.”

“…”

“Who would’ve known,” Sang Yan turned back. “You’ve already touched me everywhere.”

“…” Wen Yifan wanted to defend herself, but felt like he was telling the truth. She didn’t reply him and changed the topic. “You should have your dinner first. It’s getting late.”

Hearing that, Sang Yan asked, “Have you eaten?”

Wen Yifan nodded. “I ate noodles.”

While she said that, Sang Yan had already walked to her. He stared at her for a while and suddenly frowned. “What sort of work are you doing?”

“Huh?”

“Can’t you be a little more reasonable?” Sang Yan’s tone was a little unhappy. “I spent so long feeding you, but you’ve lost all the weight after half a month?”

Wen Yifan was in a daze. She was about to speak when Sang Yan’s gaze paused like he noticed something. He sat down next to her and reached out to lift the hair next to her ear. His movements were light and careful, not coming into contact with her skin.

But the distance made her freeze. “What’s wrong?”

Sang Yan noticed the wound behind her ear and his lips downturned.

“What happened?”

Wen Yifan hadn’t registered what had happened and asked, “Huh?”

Sang Yan’s eyes lowered and his fingers lightly pressed against the wound, out of his control. “How did this happen?”

Hearing this, Wen Yifan suddenly recalled the small wound she sustained from the scene of the accident. It’d been a few days and scab had formed. She pretty much forgot about it since it didn’t hurt anymore.

“It got cut by the rubble.” Wen Yifan was slightly nervous at his touch. “It’s not that serious.”

Sang Yan didn’t touch her again, but he continued to stare at the place behind her ear.

“It’s just a small scar, it’s nothing big.” Wen Yifan changed the topic. “Right, why did you come to Beiyu? Didn’t I tell you that I was was going home tomorrow? I even ordered cake for you.”

Sang Yan put his hand down and casually said, “I’m here for my present.”

Wen Yifan muttered an ‘ah’ and said, “But the present I prepared for you is at home.”

After a while, Sang Yan hummed in response.

Wen Yifan added, “I’ll give it to you when we get home.”

“Hm,” Sang Yan stared at her lips and said, “Get my phone for me.”

Wen Yifan glanced over, but didn’t see the device on the table. She turned back, wanting to tell him that it wasn’t there, but her words were left hanging on her lips. She saw Sang Yan, who’d been a distance away from her move forward.

He was practically where she’d been before turning.

She couldn’t stop on time and her lips brushed over the corner of his.

Wen Yifan’s body froze over.

Sang Yan maintained his position without moving too. His expression was masked over as he stared at the way she was caught off guard. Two seconds later, his lips curved up a little and muttered, “Thanks.”

“…”

“I’ve received it.”
