Chapter 50

Couldn’t Hold Back

Without waiting for a reaction from Wen Yifan, Sang Yan stood up and elaborately brought out his phone from his pocket and swirl it a little in his hand. After a while, like he just realised it, he shamelessly said, “So it was here.”

“…”

He then said in a generous sort of voice, “No need for you to look for it anymore.”

Unsure if it was a trick of her mind, Wen Yifan felt her lips going numb. The already small room felt more cramped and the temperature went up till it was burning hot.

Staring at his lips for a few more seconds, Wen Yifan suddenly stood up.

“I’ll go wash the apples.”

She didn’t wait for him to reply and immediately snatched the two apples and went into the washroom. She slammed the door shut and stared at her obviously red face in the mirror, her mind filled with the unexpected touch.

She stabilised her breathing and let the water run.

Washing apples shouldn’t take too long.

Afraid that she would be too obvious, Wen Yifan didn’t spend too much time and left the washroom.

At that moment, Sang Yan was standing next to the table, tearing open the bag containing his dinner. Wen Yifan sat next to him without saying anything.

Sang Yan side-glanced her, but didn’t say anything about receiving his present earlier.

Like the both of them were embarrassed to speak about an incident that had passed.

This incident passed over just like that.

Wen Yifan’s emotions gradually calmed down. She took a bite from the apple and suddenly felt that he was very miserable. He had to spend his birthday with her in this worn down hotel. Even his dinner was just randomly packed food.

Thinking back now, Wen Yifan still felt that the encounter with him at the noodle shop was surreal. When she’d not gotten a reply for him, she’d already planned to discuss with him her notion of moving out.

Just as she was about to leave,

he descended from the sky.

When the owner said, ‘After all these years, you guys are still together’,

he hadn’t replied.

He hadn’t say anything about it after that too.

Neither did he ask her why she was there, nor did he callously bring up the past, or make up an excuse for meeting up with her.

Like he didn’t care, but at the same time, like he didn’t want to bring up the past.

Or, when they were together at that moment, he’d already let go of the past completely.

Only allowing his gaze, to rest solely on her.

When Sang Yan had finished up his dinner, Wen Yifan also just finished eating her apple. She wanted to talk to him, but she didn’t know what to talk about. She still felt a little out of place.

She still wasn’t used to their new relationship status.

Noticing how late it’d gotten, and the fact that she was done with her apple, Wen Yifan couldn’t think of a reason why she should stay, yet she still wanted to stay with him for a while more. She hung her head low and didn’t say anything, mindlessly fiddling with her phone.

Sang Yan put the box away neatly and glanced at her. “Wanna eat more?”

Wen Yifan looked up. “Huh?”

Sang Yan took the other apple off the table, walked over and shoved it into her hand. He raised an eyebrow like he saw through her, smirking as he said, “Eat slower this time.”

“Are you not eating this?” asked Wen Yifan.

“Nope.”

“Oh.” Wen Yifan glanced at the time again and contemplated before saying softly, “I’ll eat for half an hour then?”

Sang Yan looked at her. “Can’t you go any slower?”

Wen Yifan took a bite and said, “…Sure.”

The room was silent again.

After cleaning up, Sang Yan sat back down next to Wen Yifan, casually playing with his phone. She unconsciously turned to watch him, coincidentally noticing the slight curve on his lips.

Wen Yifan stared at it for a few seconds and quietly looked away.

This was her first time dating.

She wasn’t sure if everyone acted this way.

Even though no words were exchanged, even though there was a hint of anxiousness, but the urge to continue staying next to each other would develop a mixed sense of unease and happiness.

Wen Yifan voluntarily asked, “When did you get your high-rail tickets?”

“Huh?” Sang Yan glanced up.

“I was thinking of buying a ticket for today last night. I was going to-” Wen Yifan paused before continuing, “-spend your birthday with you, but there was no more tickets.”

Sang Yan put down his phone and said, “Last week.”

Wen Yifan was stunned. “How did you know last week that I wouldn’t be able to make it back in time?”

“I didn’t. I just bought it in case,” said Sang Yan. “Anyhow, the tickets are refundable.”

Wen Yifan stopped chewing and only swallowed after a while. She asked, “I should do that next time too.”

“…”

Sang Yan chuckled.

Wen Yifan continued to eat her fruit, but no matter how slow she went, she couldn’t prolong the time needed to finish it. When she took the last bite, she hesitantly said, “I should head back now.”

Sang Yan hummed in response.

“We’re leaving at 8 in the morning tomorrow. You should sleep early tonight,” said Wen Yifan.

“Sure.”

Tossing the core into the rubbish bin, Wen Yifan stood up and took a few steps. Remembering something she hadn’t done yet, she suddenly turned back. “Sang Yan.”

Sang Yan was following behind her. “What’s up?”

Wen Yifan looked directly at him and seriously said, “Happy birthday.”

Sang Yan smiled as response.

“What’s you birthday wish?”

“Not saying.”

Wen Yifan blurted, “Why not?”

“Because,” Sang Yan lifted his hand and gently patted her head. His voice sounded somewhere in between being serious and not really caring. “It’s already been granted.”

Returning to her room, Wen Yifan laid the top half of her body on the bed. She blankly stared into space, in a daze. After a long while, she suddenly grabbed the pillow by her side and rolled around the bed.

All her suppressed emotions for the night finally could be released in this moment in her private space.

Wen Yifan’s eyes were bright and shiny. With the pillow in her face, she couldn’t hold back the floaty feeling welling up inside her. She took out her phone only after she’d calmed down to scroll through some messages.

Zhong Siqiao’s string of messages was the first thing she saw

Sent a photo

【My gosh, Sang Yan uploaded a photo.】

【He’s dating?】

【Do you know who it is!!!】

【Are you still going to live with him? Wouldn’t his girlfriend find fault with you? Shouldn’t you take this opportunity to bring up the issue about him moving out?】

Wen Yifan paused and tapped onto the photo.

It was a screenshot of Sang Yan’s post.

He only uploaded a few photos without any captions.

It was the birthday cake Wen Yifan ordered for him. The top of the cake was decorated with the four words ‘Happy Birthday Sang Yan’ that she’d told the cake shop staff to write.

Sang Yan didn’t have great photo-taking skills. The photos looked messy like he’d just taken them casually.

Zhong Siqiao had many mutual friends with him. There were a bunch of comments under the post. Most of them were well wishes for his birthday, but some of them were criticising his upload.

【?】

【Were you hacked?】

【Last time I told him about my birthday, he said what sort of grown man cares about birthdays. He even said I trying to be a hipster!!!】

【Be more normal, ok? No one cares!】

At the very bottom, Sang Yan replied to a comment.

【Well, don’t mind me. My girlfriend’s the one who asked me to post it.】

Wen Yifan closed the photo. Although she hadn’t told him to do it, but seeing the comments riled up her emotions again.

Wen Yifan blinked and replied Zhong Siqiao : 【She probably wouldn’t.】

WYF : 【His girlfriend is me.】

After typing it out, Wen Yifan stared at the words and smiled. She sent it out and switched to the chat with Qian Weihua, informing him that a friend was coming along the trip back to Nanwu.

Qian Weihua was amicable and immediately agreed : 【That’s fine.】

At the same time, Wen Yifan’s message inbox exploded.

It was all Zhong Siqiao’s spam of messages.

【?】

【???】

【??????】

It was true that Wen Yifan hadn’t said anything to Zhong Siqiao before. She was a little embarrassed and guilty as she replied : 【That’s roughly what happened.】

WYF : 【It was just confirmed.】

ZSQ : 【Didn’t you tell me before that the both of you! Had no spark!】

Wen Yifan couldn’t recall saying that. 【Did I?】

ZSQ : 【YES!】

ZSQ : 【I mean you didn’t say that exactly, but that was the gist of it!】

WYF : 【Oh…….】

WYF : 【I probably】

WYF : 【Couldn’t Hold Back】

ZSQ : 【…】

ZSQ : 【?】

The next day, Wen Yifan went to Sang Yan’s room to look for him after packing up. When she saw him, the same surreal feeling washed over her. She warmly said, “We’re having breakfast downstairs before driving back.”

Sang Yan tiredly mumbled a ‘hm’.

Wen Yifan looked at him again without saying anything and brought him over to Qian Weihua and Mu Chengyun’s room.

It didn’t take long before they both came out.

Four of them had all met each other before. Qian Weihua had met Sang Yan during the fire, so he wasn’t surprised to see him. He greeted him. “Did you come to Beiyu for work or for a holiday?”

“I came looking for someone,” Sang Yan simply replied.

Mu Chengyun’s gaze swept over Sang Yan and Wen Yifan and didn’t say a thing.

They all went down.

Qian Weihua and Wen Yifan held onto the room cards to check out at the concierge.

Sang Yan and Mu Chengyun stood at the side while they waited.

After half a minute, Mu Chengyun voluntarily spoke with a wide smile. “Senior Sang, I know you wanted to meet Sister Yifan, but you followed her here even though she’s out here for work. That’s not very appropriate, don’t you think?”

Hearing that, Sang Yan tilted his head to glance at him with a plain expression.

“Sister Yifan has a good personality so she probably wouldn’t get angry at you,” said Mu Chengyun, “but you should consider her circumstances too.”

As though there were sense to his words, Sang Yan slowly said, “Oh.”

Perhaps it was because he’d been embarrassed by Sang Yan before, Mu Chengyun wanted to save his own face this time. He paused before saying, “With your method of chasing after someone, no wonder it doesn’t work.”

After returning the room cards, Wen Yifan collected the deposit and walked towards Sang Yan with Qian Weihua.

They were about 5 to 6 metres away. Sang Yan was slightly taller than Mu Chengyun. He stood tall and his presence overpowered the younger man. They were talking, but with his nonchalant expression, he didn’t seem to care about the other at all.

He didn’t even care about anything the other had to say and treated it like the passing wind by his ears.

Wen Yifan overheard Sang Yan say, “We’ve long passed that stage.”

Mu Chengyun was stunned.

After a few moments.

“The both of us now,” Sang Yan’s eyes moved and caught her gaze. As though he thought of something, he smirked and spelled out each word, “Have, mutual, feelings.”

“…”

“Have mutual feelings,” Sang Yan repeated and casually added, “Have you heard of that phrase before?”

“…”

Qian Weihua didn’t understand what was going on and assumed they were speaking about young people things. He didn’t join in the conversation.

However, Wen Yifan was aware that those were her words from the previous night.

And Sang Yan was staring at her while he said it out.

At that moment, Wen Yifan somehow realised that Sang Yan had meant those words for her ears. Plus, when she’d said it last night, Sang Yan had laughed for a long while.

She reached a moment of epiphany.

He probably thought that while she had said it in a serious tone, she’d probably looked quite silly.

Wen Yifan bit her lips, feeling a little awkward.

Sigh.

It wasn’t like she had any experience.

She just thought that there should be some sort of formality to go through with these things. After all, it wasn’t like a legally-binding marriage certificate. Since there wasn’t any proof, at least they had to go through the process with words before the relationship became official.

Because they arrived, the conversation between Sang Yan and Mu Chengyun was interrupted.

Wen Yifan quietly returned to Sang Yan’s side.

They walked behind. It didn’t take long before Wen Yifan felt Sang Yan hook his finger with hers for a short while before letting go. It wasn’t a hard tug but it wasn’t too light either and it left a slight tingle.

She involuntarily looked up to see his slightly turned face.

Sang Yan lowered his eyes and looked at her with a slightly cheeky smile. He bent down slightly, leaning close to her and asked in a low voice, “How about you? Have you heard of it?
